Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about boat yard and marina coverage.

Does general liability cover damage to a customer's boat?

No, and this is the gap that catches most yards. General liability excludes property in your care, custody, and control — which is precisely what a customer's vessel is once it is on your hardstand or in your rack. That exposure sits under marina operators legal liability, written as a separate limit.

What is USL&H, and does my yard need it?

The Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act is a federal scheme covering maritime employment on or adjacent to navigable water. A yard worker injured on a floating dock or alongside a hauled vessel can fall under USL&H rather than state workers compensation, and a state-only policy will not respond. Most boat yards need the endorsement.

How should I set my care, custody, and control limit?

To your peak exposure, not your average. Set the limit against the total hull value on your property at the busiest point of the season — typically haul-out or winter layup — because that is when a single fire or storm can reach the most boats at once.

Are we covered when a boat we serviced fails after it leaves?

That is ship repairers legal liability and products-completed operations, not the in-custody coverage. It responds to damage traced to your workmanship after the vessel is back with its owner, including sea trials.

What do you need to quote a boat yard?

Annual receipts split by operation (storage, repair, dockage, fuel), peak hull values on site, number of employees and whether any work over water, your lift and rack capacity, and details of any docks or seawalls you own. Most quotes come together in a single conversation.
